Grace Wisher, born a free Black girl, assisted Mary Pickersgill in the production of the American flag that would fly over Fort McHenry in the War of 1812 and inspire the writing of a poem that would later become the national anthem. Grace was halfway through a contract of indentured servitude in 1813 when the Star-Spangled Banner was sewn. She has been erased from the history of one of America’s most enduring symbols and this sampler was created to honor her memory and contributions.
